Q
How did you discover your love for luge?
A
I tried out for luge when I was 12 years old without really fully knowing what I was getting myself into. I was never a daredevil as a child so it wasn’t exactly something I would have expected to dive right into. But the challenge and uniqueness of it was very appealing to me and I enjoyed being a bit out of my element! Eventually it turned me into a bit more of an adrenaline junkie!
Q
As an Olympian, what are your go to’s things to do when you need some good relaxation?
A
I grew up in a very rural area just outside the Adirondack Park, my parents’ house is on a dead end road so when I need peace and quiet that is a perfect spot to go. If that isn’t possible, just getting outdoors for a walk or paddle or anything is really quite therapeutic. Obviously that isn’t totally possible while on the road half the year (except for the walk part..) but I enjoy doing yoga and kind of giving my mind a break when it needs it.
Q
What has been your number 1 top moment of your career to date?
A
Winning an Olympic medal is a hard moment to top! It wasn’t something I expected at the time, even though it was ultimately the goal when being successful in the sport and going to the Olympics. Winning World Championships in 2009 was also a really big moment for me. It was the first time I had ever medalled in a race at that level. It was a big moment because it showed that I could compete with and be among the best in the world.
Q
How did you discover your love for camping?
A
I grew up exploring an adventuring with family around the Northeast but predominantly in the Adirondacks. Family vacations consisted of camping trips more than anything else and have given me a ton of amazing memories and my passion and appreciation for the outdoors.
Q
What’s the best place you’ve ever visited/camped?
A
The Na Pali coast in Hawaii. I hike the Kalalau trail and camped on the beach for a couple days. It was amazing!
Q
If you could go camping with anyone in the world (dead or alive), who would it be and why?
A
My fiancé (very soon to be husband). He wasn't able to camp or travel as much as I did growing up and would love to share it with him as much as I can. I have spent so much of my life traveling around the world so I am very much looking forward to adventuring around the US with him!
Q
What’s your goal for 2018, camping, or non-camping related?
A
Transition into a non-competitive athlete life, finish the NYC Marathon in Nov, get into a remote internship program with EY (Ernst & Young).
Q
What’s your favorite slogan/quote ?
A
Don't let the judgement of another dictate the path of your future.
