SUIR RIVER – THE ULTIMATE ANGLERS DREAM

This limestone beauty flows 114 miles until it reaches Waterford port and enters the sea. This is the second largest river in Ireland, and no surprise here it is also world famous for its dry fly fishing. The river is quite wide, 30m/100ft, also very accessible and angler friendly with a solid, levelled, gravelly surface.

  • Trout Average Size: From 25 to 35cm (However if you’re in luck, larger trout have been caught before)
  • Fly Size Used: Anything from sizes 12 to 22.
  • Hatches Used: Blue Wing Orange (BWO) Hatch, Spurwings, Caddis, Black Gnats.
  • Dry Flies Used: Klinkhammers, Elk Hair Caddis, Small Bead Heads, Comparaduns.
  • Recommended Equipment for Fishing on the Suir: 9ft rod, #4/5 Line & 6X and 7X Leaders

 

NIRE RIVER – OFFERS CHALLENGING FISHING

River Nire is located near the Comeragh Mountains, which is south of Clonmel. It flows through the Nire Valley until it joins up with the river Suir. River Nire is narrower compared to the Suir, with a width of 12m/35ft. Accessibility to this river is reasonable however challenging at times as, there is a ripple and pool formation with a wading surface of medium sized rocks. The Nire is very well known for its dry fly fishing, because of its shallow nature.

  • Trout Average Size: From 20 to 35cm (Larger fish can be caught during high water)
  • Fly Size Used: From sizes 12 to 22.
  • Hatches Used: Blue Wing Orange (BWO) Hatch, Spurwings, Sedges, Stoneflies, Terrestrials.
  • Dry Flies Used: Comparaduns, Klinkhammers, Elk Hair Caddis, Black Knat, Small Bead Heads.
  • Recommended Equipment: 7 to 8ft rod, #3/5 Line & 6X and 7X Leaders.

 

TAR RIVER – GOOD STOCK OF BROWN TROUT

The river Tar, is based in Clogheen, County Tipperary, between the towns of Ardfinnan and Newcastle, where it later joins the river Suir. The river is well known for its healthy growth of ranunculus weed, which promotes insect life and therefore attracts big fish to the river. The Tar river, is also very wide (54 to 75ft) and shallow, hence it is very angler accessible.

  • Trout Average Size: Home to some large fish, from 25 to 45cm.
  • Fly Size Used: From sizes 12 to 24.
  • Hatches Used: Blue Wing Orange (BWO) Hatch, Spurwings, Caddis, Black Gnats.
  • Dry Flies Used: Dry flies are more commonly used on this river, than hatches; Klinkhammers, Comparaduns, Elk Hair Caddis, Small Bead Heads.
  • Recommended Equipment: 8ft rod, #3/4 Line & 6X and 7X Leaders.

 

ANNER RIVER – TRIBUTARY OF THE RIVER SUIR

The Anner river, flows through some beautiful pastureland in County Tipperary.

  • Trout Average Size: From 25 to 35cm.
  • Fly Size Used: From sizes 12 to 22.
  • Hatches Used: Blue Wing Orange (BWO) Hatch, Spurwings, Caddis, Black Gnats.
  • Dry Flies Used: Dry flies are more commonly used on this river, than hatches; Klinkhammers, Comparaduns, Elk Hair Caddis, Small Bead Heads.
