7 Camping Essentials You Must Have

What you should take on your camping trip depends on what type of trip you have in mind. The gear best suited for each usually has to do with weight and packability, so make sure you consider which you’ll spend more time doing when you shop for gear.

In this guide, we are focusing on the most obvious camping-specific equipment that's essential for all trips (besides the tent itself).

Sleep Bags

Like tents, sleeping bags come in different weights and handle different temperatures, so you have to do some research to find the one best suited for you, where you plan to camp, and when. A good place to start is with the Crua Mummy Sleeping Bag as a good all-around bag. The mummy shaped sleeping bag is high spec and double layered to keep you comfy and cozy. The sleeping bag has a temperature rating of 23°F (-5°C).

Sleeping Pads

On top of that, most people will also want a sleeping pad, an air-filled pad that sits between your sleeping bag and the ground so you can get a little more comfortable. Our self-inflating mattress is perfect for this with a versatile temperature range of +45°C (113°F) to -25°C (-13°F).

Hiking Boots or Shoes

You’ll want to grab some hiking boots or shoes, depending on the type of trip you’re taking. Your sneakers will do just fine in many places, but if you’re planning on going for a longer backpacking trip, dedicated shoes are much more comfortable since they offer more support, padding, and stability for your ankles as your cross rough terrain. For general all-around hiking shoes, check out this handy guide over at Backpacker.com

Depending on the type of camping you are doing, you might need extra shelter for yourself or around the campsite - that’s where Tarp shelters help out. A tarp shelter will protect you from the sun and the rain to keep you shady and dry wherever you are.

If you are anchoring your tent in soft soil, snow or sand, then you need Storm Stakes. These extra-long, heavy-duty stakes withstand the rigors of adventure around the globe and provide the extra security that is necessary to secure your tent in even the most strenuous weather conditions.

The type of backpack you need will largely depend on whether you’re going camping or backpacking. If you’re camping, you arguably don’t need a backpack at all (though you will want a day pack for small hikes ).

For backpacking, the type of bag you need depends completely on what you plan on doing (day packs, overnight, and long haul). Backpacker has a great rundown of some of the best hiking backpacks of 2019 which is a great place to find your ideal backpack.

Flashlights and Lanterns

It gets dark in the woods (surprise), so you want something to help you see at night. A sturdy, reliable flashlight will work here, such as this $9 LE LED Flashlight. A lantern for around the campsite and inside your tent is also super useful for making your way around. The Crua LED light for $9 is perfect for inside your tent or hammock.
